Residential Programs
The Journey Within is an initiative dedicated to the understanding and practice of Self-enquiry (Atma-Vichara) in the light of the teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi and the principles of Advaita Vedanta. It offers both free online sessions and deeper, immersive residential programs for sincere seekers.
The Journey Within Residential Programs are designed to take a seeker progressively deeper—from understanding the fundamentals of Self-enquiry to exploring the subtle obstacles on the path and, ultimately, to a deeper investigation of the direct teachings of Sri Bhagavan.
The programs combine Sravana (listening to the teachings), Manana (deep reflection), and Nididhyasana (contemplative assimilation) with guided meditations, group discussions and Q&A sessions. The emphasis throughout is not merely on acquiring knowledge, but on making the teachings clear, personal and experiential.
Currently, Journey Within offers three residential programs:
Duration: 2 days
The Level 1 Retreat is designed for beginners on the path of Jnana and for those who have a sincere interest in discovering who they truly are.
The retreat begins with the fundamentals of Self-enquiry as taught by Sri Ramana Maharshi and gradually takes the seeker towards the deeper teachings of Jnana Marga. No prior study of Advaita Vedanta is required. What is essential is a genuine desire to understand oneself beyond the body, mind and personality.
The teachings are presented systematically according to the traditional approach of Sravana, Manana and Nididhyasana. Each topic is explained in simple language, followed by opportunities for reflection, meditation, group discussion and Q&A.
The objective is to help participants move beyond merely hearing or intellectually understanding the teachings and begin to look within and investigate their own experience.
1. Preparing for the Journey
2. Understanding and Practising Self-Enquiry
3. Understanding Reality
4. Continuing the Journey
5. Wisdom of Sri Ramana Maharshi
The exact sequence and depth of the topics are designed to take the participant progressively from the basic understanding of Self-enquiry towards the higher vision of non-duality.
Every major topic is supported by group discussions, reflective exercises, Q&A and guided meditations. These provide an opportunity for participants to clarify their understanding and examine how the teachings relate to their own lives and experiences.
Every participant receives a detailed bilingual guidebook specially prepared for the retreat.
The guidebook includes:
The guidebook is intended not merely as a reference for the two-day retreat, but as a companion for the seeker’s continued journey.
Duration: 2 days
The Level 2 Retreat is for those who have successfully completed the Level 1 Retreat and are ready to take their Atma-Vichara practice deeper.
While Level 1 establishes the foundation, Level 2 focuses more closely on the practical difficulties that a sincere seeker may encounter while walking the path of Self-enquiry.
The retreat draws extensively from the teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi, while remaining firmly rooted in the vision of Advaita Vedanta and the wisdom of the great Rishis who realized the Truth.
As one’s practice deepens, merely knowing the teachings is not enough. Subtle tendencies, habits, attachments and identification with the ego can continue to obstruct one’s progress.
Level 2 therefore focuses on recognizing these obstacles and learning how to deal with them in a practical and experiential manner.
The retreat combines practical guidance, small-group discussions, Q&A, guided meditations and contemplative practices to help participants deepen their understanding, address challenges in their practice, and make the teachings increasingly experiential.
The Level 2 retreat covers:
Participants receive a detailed workbook containing the teachings, reflections and exercises covered during the retreat.
It is designed to support both the retreat experience and continued personal practice afterwards.
Duration: 2 days
The Journey Within Satsang is regarded by many participants as the flagship program under the Journey Within umbrella.
It is offered only to seekers who have successfully completed at least the Level 1 Retreat (completion of the Level 2 Retreat is recommended), as the Satsang assumes a foundational understanding of Self-enquiry and Advaita Vedanta.
Unlike the Level 1 and Level 2 retreats, the Satsang is not a standard course that is repeated with the same content. Every Satsang is unique and is offered only once.
The Satsang takes the seeker deeper into the direct teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi.
Rather than simply presenting the teachings as concepts to be understood, the Satsang examines Sri Bhagavan’s own words with great care—sometimes investigating a single statement or teaching in considerable depth to understand the intent behind it.
The objective is to help the seeker move from knowing about the teachings to actually walking the path.
The teachings are explored through:
After each major topic, participants have the opportunity to discuss, question and examine their understanding. This helps prevent the teachings from remaining merely intellectual and encourages a deeper assimilation of the Truth.
A distinctive feature of the Satsang is its exhaustive Satsang Manual, prepared in English and Malayalam.
The manual is designed to be more than a record of the two-day program. It is intended to become a long-term companion for the seeker—something that can be revisited, reflected upon and used in one’s continuing practice.
The three programs are designed to complement one another while serving different stages of the seeker’s journey.
Level 1 establishes the foundation of Self-enquiry and introduces the vision of Advaita.
Level 2 takes the practitioner deeper into the practical obstacles, tendencies and challenges that arise on the path.
Satsang takes the seeker into an intensive and deeper investigation of Sri Ramana Maharshi’s direct teachings, with the aim of making the teachings increasingly clear, relevant and experiential.

The Level 1 Retreat is open to beginners who have a keen interest in Self-enquiry and a genuine desire to understand their true nature.

First you must decide what is satsang. It means association with sat or Reality. One who knows or has realized sat is also regarded as sat.Such association with sat or with one who knows sat is absolutely necessary for all.
